First Muay Thai Class in Thailand: What to Expect (And Why You Shouldn't Be Scared)

Does the idea of walking into a Muay Thai gym make you nervous? You are not alone. Many visitors to Krabi want to try the national sport but feel intimidated. They imagine a dark room full of angry fighters hitting each other.
At Over The Top Gym, the reality is very different. Our atmosphere is bright, welcoming, and family-friendly.
If you are thinking about booking your first class but don't know what to expect, here is a breakdown of a typical session:
1. The Warm-Up (10-15 Minutes) This is often the hardest part! You will start with skipping rope and some light running around the mats to get your heart rate up. Don't worry if you can't skip rope like a pro—just do your best. We also do dynamic stretching to prepare your muscles.
2. Shadow Boxing (Technique) Before hitting anything, you need to learn how to stand. The trainers will teach you the basic stance, how to hold your guard, and how to throw a basic jab and cross. You will practice these movements in the air (shadow boxing) in front of a mirror.
3. Pad Work (The Fun Part!) This is the highlight of the training. You will work 1-on-1 with a Thai trainer holding "pads" (thick targets on their arms).
- They will call out punches or kicks.
- You hit the pads as hard as you can.
- Good news: The pads absorb the shock. It feels amazing and is a great stress reliever!
4. Bag Work & Drills While others are on the pads, you will practice your combinations on the heavy bags or do partner drills.
- Important: For beginners, partner drills are "technical only." There is NO hard sparring. You will not get punched in the face. We prioritize safety above all else.
5. Conditioning & Cool Down We finish the class together with some bodyweight exercises (push-ups, sit-ups) and a good stretch.
The "Over The Top" Promise No one cares if you are out of shape. No one judges you if you don't know left from right. Everyone in the gym—from the champions to the tourists—started exactly where you are today.
So, leave your fear at the hotel and bring your enthusiasm. You might just discover your new favorite sport!
