5 Essential Muay Thai Techniques Every Beginner Must Master

Muay Thai, known as the "Art of Eight Limbs," is one of the most complete and effective striking martial arts in the world. Whether you are training for fitness or to fight, everything starts with the basics.

Here are the 5 fundamental techniques that every student at Over The Top starts with:

    • The Jab The straight punch with the lead hand. It is the most used weapon in Muay Thai. It’s not just about power; it’s a tool for measuring distance, blinding your opponent, and setting up powerful combinations.

    • The Teep (Push Kick) Often called the "foot jab." This is your long-range weapon. It is perfect for controlling distance, disrupting your opponent's rhythm, and pushing them back when they get too close.

    • The Low Kick A circular kick aimed at the opponent's thigh (inner or outer). In Thailand, this is used to "chop down the tree." A well-placed low kick can limit your opponent's mobility instantly.

    • The Clinch Unlike boxing or kickboxing, Muay Thai allows you to hold your opponent. The clinch is a close-range wrestling position where you control the neck/head to off-balance your opponent and land knees or elbows.

    • The Knee A devastating technique used from the clinch or on the approach. Knees generate massive power from the hips and are a signature of the Thai style.
